Following requests by the Village Alliance and Community Board 2 & 5, the Department of Transport will soon commence work to create new protected bike lanes on Fifth Avenue, between Eighth and Twenty-Third Street.
This improvement aims to address the Vision Zero Priority Area and Vision Zero Priority Intersection (14th street) as it seeks to eliminate all deaths from traffic crashes regardless of whether on foot, bicycle, or inside a motor vehicle. Within the period of 2010-2014, these streets have witnessed 1 fatality and 24 severe injuries. The proposed enhancement would install parking-protected bike lanes with painted pedestrian islands.
Specifically on Eighth Street, DOT will be removing 8 parking spaces and installing a curbside green bike lane along the east curb. At the same time, a split-phase signal operation will protect pedestrians and bicyclists from southbound left turning vehicles.
