New Bike Lanes on 5th Ave!

Following requests by the Village Alliance and Community Board 2 & 5, the Department of Transport will soon commence work to create new protected bike lanes on Fifth Avenue, between Eighth and Twenty-Third Street. 

This improvement aims to address the Vision Zero Priority Area and Vision Zero Priority Intersection (14th street) as it seeks to eliminate all deaths from traffic crashes regardless of whether on foot, bicycle, or inside a motor vehicle. Within the period of 2010-2014, these streets have witnessed 1 fatality and 24 severe injuries. The proposed enhancement would install parking-protected bike lanes with painted pedestrian islands.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City on March 25, 1911 was the deadliest industrial disaster in the history of the city, and one of the deadliest in US history. The fire caused the deaths of 146 garment workers – 123 women and 23 men who died from the fire, smoke inhalation, or falling or jumping to their deaths.
