Mannes School of Music at the New School announces special evening of words and music with Marcia Butler, debut author of The Skin Above My Knee, in conversation with Pulitzer prize-winning music journalist, author, and Mannes Alum, Tim Page

Both alumni of Mannes School of Music, Marcia Butler and Tim Page will discuss Butler’s memoir, described by Publishers Weekly as “a moving account of how passion and creativity can be powerful weapons against neglect, cruelty and self-harm.” Butler, a former professional oboist, has performed with many prestigious orchestras and alongside musical luminaries including Andre Watts, Dawn Upshaw, and Keith Jarrett.

The event will also include performances by English horn soloist and member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Pedro Diaz, who will play an excerpt of music discussed in the book, “The Shepherd's Song” from Tristan und Isolde by Richard Wagner.

Butler’s memoir has received strong early reviews. The New York Times Book Review says, “For Marcia Butler, the oboe was a protective garment and a ticket to the world, though both applications came at a steep price... The Skin Above My Knee ultimately succeeds because it leaves readers knowing a thing or two about an esoteric world” and New York Magazine calls the book “original and lyrically written.”
