A Village Guide to Hispanic Heritage Month

September in the Village ushers in Hispanic Heritage Month, and with it, an invitation to celebrate the flavors, traditions, and creativity of Latino culture, which is written into the very DNA of the Village.

This year, we’re taking a walk through the district to highlight just a few of the restaurants that bring that heritage to life.

La Contenta Oeste

📍 78 W 11th Street

A cozy, candlelit spot where chef Luis Arce Mota pays homage to his roots with refined takes on Mexican classics. The margaritas are legendary, but it’s the fish tacos and enchiladas de camarón that keep locals coming back.

Eva’s x Cinco de Mayo

📍 11 W 8th Street

Equal parts juice bar, wellness café, and taqueria, Eva’s manages to make healthy food craveable. They carry a wide lineup of tacos and bowls that balance comfort with vibrancy.

Classic Arepas

📍31 W 8th Street

A Village favorite where the menu reads like a love letter to Venezuela. Golden, griddled arepas stuffed with shredded beef, black beans, and salty queso make for the ultimate handheld meal.

Carnito Tacos NYC

📍 86 University Place

The neighborhood’s buzziest new kid, Carnito has been racking up attention with its bold flavors and late-night energy. Expect birria dripping with jus, smoky al pastor, and a playlist that makes you want to linger.

Birria LES

📍 34 St Marks Pl

This downtown institution has made its mark with tacos that feel like a celebration in every bite. The quesabirria, oozing with cheese and dunked in rich consommé, is non-negotiable.

ENJOY THESE FESTIVE FLAVORS OF THE VILLAGE

Hispanic Heritage Month is about honoring stories of resilience and creativity—and in the Village, those stories come served on warm tortillas, folded into arepas, and sipped slowly over tequila and mezcal. Take a walk, take a friend, and take pride in the flavors that make the Village one-of-a-kind.
